I just had a discussion with a sixth grader this afternoon about whether she has learned about parts of speech yet. She shrugged. I said, “You know, nouns, verbs, pronouns?” She said, “Oh yeah, we talked about that once.” I said “Once?” She said, “Yeah. It was boring, so we just read now.”
Somewhere, my sixth-grade grammar teacher St. Mary Michael just shivered.
