One cool cat

Frank Zappa came home with us after a wedding reception 16 years ago.

That’s not exactly true. He actually came to our house a few days after the reception, transported in a cage. Frank, a lovable orange tabby cat who thought he was a dog, belonged to one of my wife’s friends. Her new husband was allergic to cats, so Frank and his brother, (Pink) Floyd, came to stay with us.

Let me preface this by saying that I’m not really a cat person, which is what people always say right before they tell you how many cats they have. At the height of our feline folly, Casa Schillig was home to five, which puts us not quite in the league of those wackadoodles you see on the evening news, the ones whose homes are raided by county officials who cart out animals in crates, covered by a reporter who drew the short straw and gets to interview the neighbors, who explain that even though the area for nine miles around smells like an ammonia factory, Mrs. Perriwinkle is still such a nice lady.

But we were close.

We farmed out Nala about the time she decided my open duffel bag was a litter box. D.C. went shortly after a regrettable incident where he hacked up a hair ball into our satellite receiver, shorting it out and creating a high-decibel screeching as the unit committed harakiri. Floyd hung around for a long time, but old age and general decrepitude finally had its way.

Frank, however, was eternal. He was the Greeting Cat, always brushing up against company, always begging at the dinner table in hopes that a stray piece of chicken — or stuffing, or steak, or bread, or … — would come his way. It often did.

Each morning before dawn, Frank would prowl at the foot of the bed, meowing loudly for his morning meal, which consisted of a pouch of Friskies (any flavor, he wasn’t particular) and a bowl of hard pellets. If you didn’t meet his culinary requirements immediately, the meowing would — and sometimes did — continue for hours. Once, I outlasted him until sunrise, but I gained nothing except 120 minutes of staring at the ceiling, listening to him tromp back and forth like a soldier whose superiors had denied his request for leave.

Even in his dotage, Frank kept up the morning breakfast call, although he more often voiced his wake-up alarm from the living room downstairs. The lack of proximity merely meant he had to pump up the volume, which he did.

Frank was our tough guy. He didn’t like to be picked up, but he loved to come to you on his own terms and snuggle on the couch. He spent his days traveling from chair to bed to chair again, following sunbeams as the moved from room to room. He was also good at dispensing justice to the two remaining cats, Oliver and Beckham, meting it out with one paw that descended like thunder from above.

A few months ago, Frank abruptly stopped grooming himself. He started to look like some kind of feline porcupine, hair sticking up at odd angles as if he suffered a terminal case of bed-head. He had a funny odor as a result, and I dubbed him “Bill the Cat” in honor of Berkeley Breathed’s cartoon feline, a disgusting ball of fur that let out with the occasional “Ack!” in the comic strip “Bloom County.”

Still, Frank would join us for dinner. Just last week, he plowed through most of a pork chop, which my wife fed him by hand, one piece at a time. We started wondering if he would make it to legal adulthood, 21, and what kind of drink he would order at his party.

But it wasn’t to be. A visit to the vet last Friday revealed that a swelling in Frank’s face was not an abscessed tooth, as I’d hoped, but rather a tumor, as my wife, ever the realist, feared. The vet found another in his abdomen.

Old age comes to us all, if we’re fortunate, and when we look back on our lives, memories of chicken, pork chops, and sunny afternoons spent in solitude or in the company of people who love us isn’t such a terrible legacy.

So now the two remaining cats get Frank’s share of Friskies each morning, and there is nobody to drop the hammer on either of them when they step out of line. I’m still not a cat person, not really, but Frank, who thought he was a dog, wasn’t your average cat. I miss him.

Unfair grading

Ohio released state report card results in the Twilight Zone time last Friday.

A Friday release of major news generally means somebody has something to hide. It’s based on a belief that reporters are less attentive on a Friday — especially in the afternoon and early evening — than at other times.

I don’t know what the Ohio Department of Education might want to hide, except perhaps that report card information came out later than usual. I doubt officials hoped to deflect the hue and cry that generally accompanies release of this data, especially now that the state is assigning grades of A through F for schools, because embarrassing public schools has been high on Ohio’s agenda for at least a decade.

Nevertheless, the media and the general public appear to have grown weary of the constant denigration of schools that accompanies state report card information. For one thing, it requires a statistician to decipher just what the numbers behind the letter grades mean. Districts that do perfectly well in most measures can see this good news wiped out by failure to make progress in closing the so-called achievement gap between certain segments of their population and the overall student body.

Report-card figures, no matter how they are parsed or spun, always confirm what salivating data dogs vehemently deny: that student performance is largely dependent on factors that have nothing to do with the quality of their schools. Some research indicates that as much as 60 percent of children’s performance in the classroom is predicated on their lives outside of school, while as little as 20 percent is attributed to direct teacher instruction. The other 20 percent is chalked up to error. (Even if we are generous with this other 20 percent and assign it to school and teacher quality, that’s still a 60-40 split.)

Don’t get me wrong. This 20 percent is significant, and good teachers work tirelessly to expand their sphere of influence and negate the sometimes deleterious effects of the other 60 percent. This is why students are enrolled into schools earlier and earlier in their lives, as a way to address differences that are too often the consequence of poverty.

Still, we aren’t miracle workers. I say “we” because most regular readers know that I am a proud, full-time public educator. I speak from experience when I say that the majority of my colleagues and I are swinging for the fences every single day.

Given the reality of in-school versus out-of-school factors, grading school districts and disciplining teachers based on test scores is extremely disadvantageous to districts in communities that are economically depressed or that have a high percentage of students with special needs.

More to the point, grading school districts primarily on testing gains is unfair to all students, schools and taxpayers because it paints an imperfect and inaccurate picture.

Unlike some, I have no problem with the concept of Common Core State Standards, which have been dubbed Common Corporate Standards by critics such as educational analyst Paul L. Thomas because of big-money interests lurking behind them. Having a general set of goals to which all students and teachers aspire is helpful.

Where I part company with the CCSS and their backers is in the way that standards are evaluated — test after test, a virtual orgy of bubble sheets and computer-based documentation. More and more administrators acknowledge that learning now ends in early spring, with the rest of the school year hijacked by high-stakes evaluations to determine what kids know.

The first few years of CCSS results will be rocky. Scores will be embarrassing, as will the Ds and Fs earned on district report cards. Soon enough, however, numbers and grades will begin to climb.

But when they do, it will be a mistake to attribute the gains to better teaching and especially misleading to assume that students are better prepared academically for college and life after high school. No, rising scores will indicate only that teachers have gotten better at teaching to the test, which they must do if they want to stay employed.

Lawmakers would be better advised to spend their energy and time and our tax money addressing income disparities that increasingly result in a series of “haves” and “have nots.” This does not involve fixing education as much as it does fixing tax codes and laws that allow the rich to lobby themselves lucrative corporate welfare at the expense of the expanding lower and shrinking middle class.

If struggling parents can be helped to struggle less, they will have more time to spend with their children in a stable, nurturing environment. As that occurs, the “educational” gap, which is really an income gap, will close on its own and people will realize their schools are more than adequate to the task of preparing tomorrow’s leaders and citizens.

But that may never happen. The high rollers who are quietly and not so quietly funding education reforms will continue to get rich off selling testing programs and curricula to schools to fix the “problem” that they created, and other entrepreneurs will continue to make a mint off taxpayer money that follows kids from public to private charter schools, where these same opportunists own controlling interests.

If the nation ever wakes up to this boondoggle and decides public education gets more right than it does wrong, let’s hope the press release comes out sometime other than a Friday afternoon.

We’re evolving because

The English language has a new preposition because evolution.

“Because,” which traditionally is a subordinating conjunction, has made the switch, at least on the Internet and among the young — or the young at heart. We can chalk it up to Twitter, which limits messages to 120 characters, including spaces, and forces brevity. So sentences like my opening one, which has “because” followed by a noun instead of either a subordinate clause or a prepositional phrase, have become — well, if not prevalent, then at least more common.

I’ve been hearing “because” used this way in the past few months, mostly by my students and occasionally online. Each time, its unexpectedness makes me smile. Despite my insistence that the exclamation mark should be saved only for headlines announcing nuclear armageddon (or the death of Zsa Zsa Gabor, who I’m convinced will be the only life form besides cockroaches to survive an atomic holocaust) and that sentences should not end in prepositions, I’m no language purist.

For example, I believe it’s OK to write the occasional fragment for linguistic effect. Even composed a few myself. I believe it’s OK to use nonstandard numbers and abbreviations in text messages, though I try not 2 do this, personally. Contrary to popular belief, research indicates that such laxness in informal writing seldom carries over into more formal contexts. I even believe it’s OK to use “OK” without spelling it out as “okay,” which just looks weird.

Often, “because” in its new clothes is used for humorous or ironic effect. For example:

I don’t understand Picasso because cubism.

My dog is scratching because fleas.

Bald is better because toupée.

When overused, such as in three sentences in a row, the prepositional “because” is the literary equivalent of the guest who won’t take the hint that it’s time to leave, even when the host has put on his pajamas, brushed his teeth, and turned out all the lights.

But when prepositional “because” makes an unexpected appearance, like Robert DeNiro in a cameo role on your favorite sitcom, it’s fresh and funny. You know, like “Pearls Before Swine” over “Garfield” on the comics page.

Megan Garber wrote a wonderful piece on the new “because” for The Atlantic last November. There, she noted that usage of the recently prepositioned “because” is, like most things, “limited only to the confines of your own imagination.” And why not?

Compare the original text of “Beowulf” to Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales” to see how different Old English was from Middle English. Do the same with Chaucer and Shakespeare to see the difference between Middle and Early Modern English. And then do the same comparison between Shakespeare and Dickens and then Dickens and Hemingway to see again how the times aren’t the only thing that’s a-changin’ — with apologies to Dylan. (Bob Dylan, not Dylan Thomas.)

Every single writer above — even the anonymous “Beowulf” scribe — was doing fantastic, inventive things with words, each one building on what came before or implicitly or explicitly rejecting what came before.

We are living in times of titanic changes in all aspects of society, including language. The “because” preposition is hardly the most noticeable or the most profound, but think of it as the shape of linguistic things to come and have fun with it.

We have to learn to roll with the changes because adaptation. As if you didn’t see something like that last sentence coming.

Survey says …

survey_icon3

Everybody wants my opinion, and everybody wants me to be “very” or “highly” satisfied.

Just the other morning, a nice woman named Brenda handed me a sticker in the drive-thru line of Dunkin’ Donuts. It said she’d love to know if she had “made my day.”

That’s a tough question to answer. Could the wave of good feelings created by a large hot tea and toasted blueberry bagel be enough to carry me through the troughs of the next 12 hours? Later that night, from the vantage point of a comfortable chair, slippers on my feet and warm pipe smoke encircling my head, would I look back over the business of the day and recognize that a 23-second transaction had changed my destiny?

In a word, no.

Yet these silly surveys persist in almost every line of business. If it’s not a clerk thrusting a receipt in my face with a 1-800 number circled at the bottom, it’s an email after the sale, asking me to rank, with “1″ being the lowest and “10″ the highest, how satisfied I was with my transaction, whether it was for a $20,000 car or a $2 loaf of bread.

And with every inquiry, there is unspoken pressure: “We want you to be very satisfied” or “Is there anything standing in the way of your being highly satisfied today?”

The answer to that last question is yes, many things are standing in the way of my highest satisfaction.

For one thing, I’m eating on the run at a fast-food joint, standing in line behind some pajama-pant-wearing mother of 14 whose kids all have what looks like Ebola running out their noses. Nobody knows what to order, despite having held up the line for what feels like hours. One of them is consistently stepping on my foot, and another is digging orangish wax out of his ear with a plastic spoon he found on the floor, effectively killing any appetite I may still have.

Or I’m in the drive-thru lane behind a diesel truck whose driver believes that everybody wants to hear the beer-drenched musical epic blaring out his speakers, even overtop the revving of his engine. He’s ordering enough food to feed a small army and flirting with the voice on the loudspeaker, calling him/her/it “honey” and “babycakes,” unaware that he’s caused a six-car nuclear meltdown behind him.

So, no, I’m not highly satisfied, very satisfied, or even just plain old satisfied.

And what if I were, indeed, only satisfied? On many surveys, “satisfied” translates to a 7 out of 10, a perfectly acceptable score. But I’m always pressured into being “very” satisfied, usually by employees with large, limpid eyes and wheedling voices whose very existences seem tied to the score that I, a complete stranger, will assign them through an automated phone call.

To me, “very” satisfied means you’ve followed me home, waxed my car, shampooed my carpets, and fed me grapes on the couch while fanning me with palm leaves. Throwing my change at me and stuffing my greasy burger into a sack is not enough to merit the modifier “very.”

Worse yet are the surveys that ask me to describe my satisfaction in words. How the heck am I supposed to do that? “The way Agnes drizzled guacamole on my cheesy potato burrito was nothing short of sublime?” “The replacement windshield, needed because some punk kid didn’t know how to catch a baseball, was artfully installed by Sidney, illuminating the interior of my car just as surely as Michelangelo’s paintings illuminate the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?” Gimme a break.

Sometimes, companies entice you to take surveys with the promise of a prize. “Just take our brief survey and you could win an iPad Mini!” and “Call this number for a chance to win $500!” are pretty common come-ons.

Of course, you have a better chance of being plucked out of your bed by aliens from Uranus than you do of winning any prize. And as soon as you indicate that you are anything other than very satisfied, your entry goes directly to the bottom circle of Dante’s Sweepstakes Hell. As a consolation, now that the company has your phone number or email address, they can sell it to other companies, who will in turn attempt to get you to buy their junk and rate their associates.

All of which is why, Brenda, I’m not going to log on to any website and rate our transaction. I smiled at you when I pulled up to the window — you might have thought I looked constipated, but trust me, it was a grin — and thanked you for your efforts. That’s the extent of our relationship. Let it be enough.
