Killer cover

1683419-inline-i-2-rolling-stone-cover-boston-bomber2

For a people that often prides itself on being shockproof, it doesn’t take much to shock Americans.

All it took last week was Rolling Stone to put Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar “Jahar” Tsarnaev on its cover.

Many readers were outraged, and #BoycottRollingStone became a trending topic on Twitter almost instantly. The usual national retailers predictably latched onto the controversy as an opportunity for free PR by announcing that they would refuse to carry the issue.

Encouragingly, however, most critics recognize the magazine is within its rights to feature anybody it wants on its cover — such recognition isn’t always a given — just as readers are within their rights not to agree with or support the magazine. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy or read anything, and economic boycotts are a time-honored American tradition. I’ve participated in a few, myself.

In this instance, I was torn over supporting Rolling Stone’s often well-researched, powerfully written reporting and my own aversion to seeing Tsarnaev receive rock-star treatment out front. To be fair, Rolling Stone front covers aren’t exclusively the province of the Jim Morrisons and John Lennons of the world, and placement there doesn’t automatically confer chic endorsement by the editors. Past covers have featured conservative U.S. presidents, social activists and, as has been often pointed out this week, Charles Manson.

In this case, Rolling Stone made it easy for me to sidestep the problem of supporting the magazine financially by posting the entire Tsarnaev article for free on its website.

Online, the story opens with a note from the editors offering sympathy to victims and families of the Boston Marathon bombing. It goes on to say that, because “serious and thoughtful coverage of … political and cultural issues” is a Rolling Stone hallmark and because “Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers,” a study of what led him to his actions is worth examination. I don’t know if the same introduction appears in print; my guess is that it’s a reaction to the furor that has erupted since the magazine went on sale.

Summarizing writer Janet Reitman’s lengthy article about Tsarnaev in a few sentences does it an injustice. Suffice to say that it makes good on the editors’ promise, chronicling a young man’s descent into the madness of religious fanaticism and his subsequent decision to kill. It is filled with observations from people who knew him well — high school friends, teachers, and especially his former wrestling coach, all of whom struggle to reconcile their memories of a seemingly normal kid with the “monster” (to use a word taken directly from the controversial cover) he became.

Whether the piece is too sympathetic toward Tsarnaev is for each reader to decide. For me, the real value comes from Reitman’s discussion with various experts on what leads a very small minority of people to become radicalized in their faiths: a mixture of isolation from family and friends, indoctrination into a belief system that promises fulfillment, and disenfranchisement with the existing social order that can become a potent cocktail for violence and murder. It’s in the best interest of every American to recognize these warning signs — to the extent that we can — to help prevent future tragedies.

Meanwhile, as a counter argument of sorts, Boston Magazine has published images of Tsarnaev on the day he was captured, bloody and bedraggled, a far cry from the handsome young man staring out at us from Rolling Stone. Maybe one of these images, taken by Sgt. Sean Murphy of the Massachusetts State Police (who is the subject of an internal investigation for releasing the photos), would have been a more appropriate cover for Rolling Stone.

But that’s a moot point, as the images weren’t available until anger over the Rolling Stone cover compelled Murphy to make them public. That’s what good reporting does, ultimately: Brings to light that which was hidden and forces us to face sometimes uncomfortable truths.

By that standard, then, though perhaps not by the standards of good taste, Rolling Stone’s decision was sound.

Race still matters

Post-racial America? Hardly.

I didn’t follow the George Zimmerman trial as closely as I should or could have, but what I know reinforces my belief that race still matters, even when we say it doesn’t. Maybe especially when we say it doesn’t.

The facts: George Zimmerman, a light-skinned Hispanic, shot Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, 2012, in a gated community in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman was a neighborhood-watch coordinator who on several other occasions had called police to report what he considered suspicious activity by black males in the area. On the night in question, he phoned to report the hoodie-wearing Martin.

Despite a dispatcher telling Zimmerman not to follow Martin, Zimmerman did exactly that. The man and the teen argued, which resulted in a bump on the head and a bloody nose for Zimmerman and a bullet through the heart for Martin.

Martin was armed only with Skittles and iced tea.

Here’s why race still matters: If somebody wearing a gun accosts me on a dark street and demands to know what I’m doing there, I can decide to accept his authority or tell him to go to hell. If I choose the latter and he and I scuffle, my actions — win, lose or draw — reflect only on me. Nobody says, “See, that’s how white males are.”

If I’m black, however, and involved in the same scenario, my actions reflect not only on me, but on every other black American. Some people — not all, but far too many — will say, “See, that’s how black males are. They’re brazen and combative and they walk around at night wearing hoodies and carrying God knows what in their pockets and if I came across one in the dark, I’d shoot him too.”

White guy, presumption of innocence. Black guy, presumption of guilt and threat of imminent danger. Shoot first, ask questions later.

Conservatives like to talk about black-on-black crime, how from 1980 to 2008, 94 percent of black murder victims were killed by blacks, as if this explains why the system must treat them differently, because of something inherent in their culture, their communities, their DNA.

Yet a U.S. Justice Department report notes that during the same 28-year period, 84 percent of white murder victims were killed by whites. So whatever problem plagues the black community apparently afflicts the white community, too.

Last month, the New York Times reported that in 2010, blacks were 3.7 times as likely as whites to be arrested for possessing marijuana. In Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Washington, D.C., they were more than five times as likely to be arrested for weed. This, despite blacks and whites using marijuana at about the same rate. Racial disparity once again.

Martin had been suspended from school for weed and had trace amounts of TLC in his blood at the time of his death, according to toxicology reports. Maybe people who use this fact to support Zimmerman believe it’s OK to execute marijuana smokers in the street, in which case it’s a boom time for funeral directors and casket-makers.

Look, maybe Zimmerman’s acquittal had more to do with sloppy investigatory work or a poorly prepared prosecution or some quirk in Florida’s legal code.

Because, clearly, the system failed. When a man pursues a teen on the street, provokes an argument and then shoots him dead on a sidewalk where the teen had every legal right to be, that man is guilty of something. Don’t talk to me about Stand Your Ground. It shouldn’t apply when the shooter stalks his prey. Talk to me instead about justice.

And whether or not race played a role in this specific case, the response to the verdict certainly has shown that race is still a focal issue for many Americans. The sad fact is that for hundreds of years, whites have killed blacks in this country with impunity, and it’s only in the last 50 years that some accountability has been applied.

Yet, in 2013, this is still a country where black parents must teach their kids to watch where they go, how they conduct themselves and how they talk, not only to police officers, but to anybody who might be looking for an excuse to harass or even kill them. And the person doing the harassing or killing might not even consciously recognize that ingrained assumptions about skin color are playing a part.

Because we live in post-racial America, you dig?

Pillorying Paula

Is it OK to say “cotton-picking” but not “cotton-picker”? It depends whom you ask.

This usage problem came to my attention though a Facebook friend. After helping a senior citizen open a produce bag in a grocery store, my friend was appalled to hear the old woman say that she just couldn’t get her “cotton-picking” hands to work.

She considered the remark racist. A few people on Facebook agreed with her, a few did not. I initially argued that “cotton-picking” — as in “wait one cotton-picking minute” or “my cotton-picking hands don’t work” — refers to the physical act of picking cotton by hand, a tedious and arduous task. It does not refer to a person, and hence is not racist.

A Google search of the term yielded a few sites that maintain a difference between the adjective “cotton-picking” and the noun “cotton-picker.” Many saw the former as a substitute for a mild profanity like “damn,” but the latter as a derogatory term for people of color in the old South, who were forced to pick the crop.

The Online Etymology Dictionary (http://www.etymonline.com) did not make this distinction, tracing the adjective no further than a Bugs Bunny cartoon, but saying it’s based on the older “cotton-picker” noun and is, therefore, “a deprecatory term.”

In the interest of sensitivity, then, I’m modifying my position and removing the adjective from my vocabulary, even though I doubt if I’ve ever used it more than two or three times.

Which brings me to Paula Deen.

These days, the celebrity chef has a lot of “formers” in front of her name: former host of a popular show on Food Network, former celebrity spokesperson for Smithfield Foods, and a woman whose products were formerly sold at Sears, Home Depot, Target, Walmart and Walgreens.

Deen’s fall from grace has been widely documented. In a deposition as part of a lawsuit, she said that she had used the N-word in the past and allowed racial jokes at her Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House.

In retrospect, it is hardly stop-the-press news that a 66-year-old Southern woman has heard and used racial slurs. Maybe people were riled by her “of course” answer when asked if she’d ever used the N-word, or perhaps by her bizarre trifecta of apologies, including one stitched together in several takes, as if she couldn’t hold herself together long enough to read a cogent statement.

Of course, the “N-word” is highly offensive. Using it now is wrong, and using it then — whenever “then” may have been — was equally wrong.

Yet who among us hasn’t at least heard racial slurs on a playground, in a locker room, or at a place of employment and failed to call out the person using them? Who hasn’t been around people of a certain age who still harbor racial insensitivities? Who hasn’t outgrown certain prejudices against particular groups and abandoned the language that goes with it?

If asked under oath about particular words and attitudes, many of us would be obligated to answer as Deen did, hopefully with the same caveat that “it’s been a very long time.”

I won’t go so far as to defend Deen. As co-owners of a business, she and her brother had an obligation to stop racist, sexist and homophobic comments and to defuse a hostile work environment. If she didn’t, shame on her.

But I also think we don’t gain much by using Deen as a poster child for racism. The companies that have distanced themselves from her are making themselves look good at her expense, while many continue to sell movies and music that exhibit some of the same problematic language and opinions for which she is being publicly pilloried.

Using the N-word isn’t like “cotton-picking” or “cotton-picker.” It’s not a judgment call; it isn’t even close. But maybe Deen’s use of it was followed by a recognition, belated though it may have been, that the word was wrong, that it was time to outgrow old and faulty points of view.

That’s called maturation, a process we’re all guilty of. We hope.

Old glorious

printable_sky_rocket_fireworks-01

It would be the perfect conclusion to any July 4 fireworks show: The night sky lighting up with an image of … me.

A company called Firebox claims it can make that happen, matching a picture of the buyer to one of “5,000 unique rockets” and then mapping to your face via newfangled computer technology. Your personalized fireworks are delivered straight to your door, just like those millions of copies of the late Slim Whitman’s greatest hits back in the ’70s.

By the way, I had relatives who owned the Slim Whitman album, which was truly hideous by any standard of musical judgment, so much so that his yodeling repelled aliens in the “Mars Attacks!” movie. I am somewhat embarrassed that they bought me a copy of Boxcar Willie’s greatest hits one year for my birthday, and even more embarrassed that I listened to it several times. Sex, drugs and Mule Train forever, baby!

But back to the Fourth of July. Unfortunately, the personalized-fireworks service is not available, probably because I waited until last Saturday to visit the site, being too distracted by more important online news, like the name of Kanye West’s new baby or videos of cute kittens wrestling in a sunbeam.

It’s probably for the best. Ohio has this nudge-nudge, wink-wink law that you can buy fireworks in state, but you have to agree to use them out of state, which is why half of your neighbors head for the borders (not) for a weeklong orgy of pyrotechnics. I don’t know if I’d break any laws by having personalized fireworks delivered by mail, but since federal officials monitor my phone calls and Internet records — and yours, too! — it’s probably safe to say they’d notice a big box filled with explosives, especially ones that look like me when detonated.

I don’t really like homegrown fireworks displays, anyway. Yeah, we live in a nanny state that has rules and regulations for everything from the temperature of restaurant coffee to the volume of car radios, but fireworks may be a valid concern. They’re dangerous, especially when mixed with copious amounts of alcohol.

Every family has an Uncle Renny, who gets blotto on malt liquor and then drags from the trunk of his station wagon enough explosives to liberate a small European nation. And he’ll always give the smallest kids sparklers, which burn at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, and let them run around in the yard, insisting they’re perfectly safe, while he blows off his damn fool leg with a Big Bertha or Roman candle.

All that blood does nothing for the barbecue, not to mention the stains it leaves on the deck.

Plus, buying a personalized firework would mean I’d have to choose a photo of myself. I like to live fairly off the grid photographically, having a face for radio, as they say. If you look elsewhere on this page, you’ll see a new picture of me, one that was years in the making and required all the skills of ace Review shutterbug Kevin Graff to make presentable.

There’s the long-haired me from decades past, the male-pattern-baldness me from about five years ago, the bearded me, the clean-shaven me, and now the Kojak me. None of which would look exactly stellar in the night sky. Pray for a rainy, cloudy Fourth if it’s my image you’ll be seeing.

Still, it would be pretty spectacular to join the other constellations, if only for five seconds. Maybe next year, and maybe accompanied by a bombastic rendition of Slim Whitman’s yodeling in “Indian Love Call.”

Hey, if it was good enough to kill Martians, it’s good enough for me.
