Thank you, Chris, for this wonderful column. It has me thinking of all the teachers that influenced me: Mr. Rick in grade school; Mrs. Knoblaugh, Mr. Welch, and Mr. Jordan in high school (in my day in those earlier grades, I don't think we knew first names); and Robert Gross, Ken Gros-Louis, and Jim Jensen in college. At least those are the first names to come to mind. As I reflect, others will emerge from the fog of memory, a long ancestral line, the genetics of the classroom alongside the genetics of our biological families.

Your comments are much appreciated, probably because I agree with them totally. Just goes to prove that even a card-carrying "liberal" can correcty analyze this sensitive subject. I too describe myself as being a liberal, and that was the first thought that came to my mind -- stricter gun control laws would not have stopped this horror!

If only people would calmly discuss various opinions and respect others, the world would be a safer place.

Hi, Chris—

My husband, J.M. DeMatteis sent me a link to your blog. We just took our daughter to college two days ago and your blog reverberates in my heart and soul. Thank you for writing this so eloquently.

While I was born and raised in Ohio, and proudly say I'm FROM there, I'm encouraged to know that some folks in Ohio are not afraid to speak up for civil rights for all.

Now we just have to get Ohio's state legislature to agree, and Buckeyes to stop electing reactionary Governors :)

Idora will always be in my heart; my childhood home was next to the ball field, and I was lullabyed to sleep by the Jack Rabbit cars filled full of laughter across my backyard! My Grandmother, Myrtle Zubal was Idora's nurse for decades, and I would work with her every spring season to ready her station for summer's woes...sweet times always will be missed; but that little girl within shall hold memories of her playground; Idora...forever!

Dear Curly, Hi from Istanbul, Turkey (where I am now assigned). Who can imagine you have retired. Perhaps not "retired" but moved on to the next chapter. If you're still running the bulls in Pamplona, stay safe. And Viva San Fermin!! Abrazos from your friend, Lee
