Jan. 30
Seton Catholic School will host an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Meet faculty, visit the classrooms and tour the building. Seton is an independent coeducational Catholic elementary school serving families from 18 communities. Registration for school year 2011-12 and admissions applications for all grade levels will be accepted. Kindergarten (full day) through 8th grade; one campus schedule for all students (8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.); and an extended day program (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) are available. Jan. 30 to Feb. 5
Seton Catholic School of Hudson is celebrating Catholic Schools Week. The weeklong event includes an open house; Seton Showcase for Art, Music and Science (open to the public) on Feb. 2 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and numerous activities on service day. There also will be parent appreciation day, student appreciation day and teacher/staff appreciation day. The 2011 theme for the week is “Catholic Schools: A+ for America.”
Feb. 1
Anyone who can provide proof of an ancestral family dwelling in Hudson by 1840 is eligible to apply for membership in First Families of Hudson. Applications are available in the archives on the upper level of the Hudson library. There is a fee of $10 ($5 for current members of the Hudson Genealogical Study Group).
The deadline is Feb. 1. Prospective members may pick up an application or contact Gwen Mayer, archivist, at 330-653 6658 ext. 1017 or E-mail gwen.mayer@hudson.lib.oh.us.

Diana Tittle, a Cleveland-based writer, editor and publishing consultant, and the author of a new book “The Severances: an American Odyssey” about the Severance family of Cleveland, will be the featured speaker at the next Hudson Heritage Association meeting at 7:30 p.m. The topic is “Follow the Money: the fortune that built Severance Hall.” Tittle holds degrees from Miami University and from Northwestern, served as editor of Northern Ohio Live, and is the author of seven previous books, all dealing with aspects of Cleveland-area life. The January 2011 issue of Timeline Magazine features her article about Julia Severance and her friendship with the wife of President Grover Cleveland (“Julia Goes to the White House”).

As part of its 91st anniversary activities this year, The Woman’s Club of Hudson plans to pay a sentimental tribute to the spirit of past members who, in 1928, brought cherry pies to the residents of the Youth Center on Hines Hill Road
On Feb. 11, the Woman’s Club ladies will make homemade cherry pies at the First Congregational Church in Hudson. The theme of the event is “Heart of a Woman.” This event is a fundraiser for scholarships for Hudson High School students.
These pies will made be by preorder only and are to be picked up Feb. 11 at the First Congregational Church between 3 and 5 p.m. Donations suggested are $12 per pie and are to be preordered and prepaid by Feb. 7.

Feb. 12
The Hudson Satellite Group of NIN (Newborns In Need, Inc.) will host its monthly work day at the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The group will be working on isolette covers, burp cloths, crib sheets, and booties and hats. There is a need for cutting fabric, sewing, stuffing polyfill, pressing, knitting and crocheting. Women and men are invited. Lunch and beverages are provided.
Feb. 12 and 13
Western Reserve Academy’s Fine and Performing Arts Department will present its annual Midwinter Madrigal Feaste featuring the Academy choir in full Renaissance costume, as well as strolling musicians, jugglers, trumpeters, harpsichord players, a royal court and a court jester. The evening begins with an opening reception at 6:15 p.m. in the McCuskey Room of Ellsworth Hall. Dinner seating begins at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the WRA music travel fund. Tickets are $45 per person and include dinner, wassail toast, wine and entertainment. Hope Community Church is hosting a Valentine’s Concert with Praise-Apella on at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are $12 in advance and $17 at the door. VIP tickets are $35 each and include a copy of Praise-Apella’s Love God CD, up-front seating and a catered dinner at 6 p.m. Opening artist is Betsy Walker. Feb. 19
Anyone who is tired of the cold winter, snow, shoveling and all of the winter gear to go with it is invited to take a break and join the Hudson Newcomers at Lake Forest Country Club for a little island adventure. There will be cocktails, hearty appetizers, music, dancing and games to help bring the warm weather and beaches of Hawaii to Hudson. The event will take place from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. Hawaiian attire is festive, but not required. The cost per couple is $40. The event is open to everyone, not just Hudson Newcomers members. Jennifer Chiaverini, quilter and author of the Elm Creek Quilts series, will speak at Laurel Lake Retirement Community, 200 Laurel Lake Drive. Her latest novel, “The Union Quilters,” is a tale of love and sacrifice set during the Civil War. The event is free, but space is limited. Feb. 26
St. Mary’s Catholic Church invites the community to a Mardi Gras Gala at 7 p.m. at the church, 340 N. Main St., Hudson. The evening features casino games, silent and live auctions, as well as delicious food catered by Mo’s restaurant in Cuyahoga Falls. An open bar will serve beer and wine.
The Mardi Gras fundraiser is the main support for St. Mary’s active and very successful Life Teen and Edge programs. The mission of Life Teen is to bring teens closer to Christ through fellowship, faith sharing, and service to others.
The Gala will help fund retreats, social outings, and service projects throughout the year. Tickets for the evening are $70 and can be obtained by calling Marie Pompili at the Life Teen office at 330-653-8118 ext 257. Dress is cocktail attire but festive masks and beads are welcome.
March 2
Hudson families can participate in Hudson Family Night: Ready, Set, Relax. The night is dedicated to relaxing and spending time as a family without the pressures of homework, after-school or evening activities.
This evening is sponsored by Community First, a local non-profit organization that promotes positive youth development and is based on developing assets in youth by uniting individuals, organizations and our schools in an effort to nurture competent, caring and responsible children and adolescents. Ready, Set, Relax is endorsed by the Hudson City Schools, many youth activity groups and is made possible through a grant from the Hudson Community Foundation.
March 5
Hudson PTO’s 54th Annual Pancake Breakfast will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hudson High School Commons, 2500 Hudson-Aurora Road. Enjoy Perkins pancakes, Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and sausage patties provided by Hudson’s Restaurant. Gluten free/allergy free alternatives are available.
Enjoy musical entertainment, the art show and children’s games, plus 50/50 raffle tickets will be available and there will also be prize baskets.
Presale tickets ($6/adult & $4.50/child) are available at The Learned Owl and Acme or tickets are available at the door with cash, check or credit card ($7/adult & $5/child). All proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast, PTO’s largest fundraising event, are given back to the Hudson City Schools as grants and scholarships.

Thursdays
A running and walking group meets at the First Congregational Church of Hudson, 47 Aurora St., on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Babysitting is available. All levels are welcome.

Donations sought
Community First partnered with the Hudson park board and high school students from Western Reserve Academy and Hudson High School’s business clubs to brainstorm and design a teen-friendly, family-oriented park on Veterans Way.
Community First is selling engraved bricks to help raise the monies needed to fund the new park.
Many brick sizes are available: $2,500 center court sponsor 16-by-16-inch bricks will surround the new basketball courts; $1,000 16-by-16-inch bricks will feature 40 developmental assets and be placed in an amphitheater type seating area; and $250 8-by-12-inch bricks are available to purchase as a family brick.

Spring season
The Laurel Lake Encore Chorale is welcoming new and returning members for its Spring 2011 season. Rehearsals are Tuesdays at 3 p.m. at Laurel Lake Retirement Community, 200 Laurel Lake Drive.
Singers may join any time.
There is no audition for membership in this 50-voice chorus, and participation is free and open to the public.
Choir members may sit or stand for performances.
Join this large, enthusiastic group of singers age 55 and older who meet weekly at Laurel Lake to explore their voices and learn challenging and fun choral repertoire under the direction of Donna Anderson.
