The landscape of rural Guernsey County appears as a patchwork of forested hills, open meadows and misty valleys threaded by numerous streams. At the heart of this region is Salt Fork State Park, encompassing the woodlands and fields flanking Salt Fork Reservoir. As Ohio’s largest state park, Salt Fork boasts recreational facilities to suit nearly every taste.

Salt Fork has a 3,000 acre lake with no horsepower limits. Salt Fork also offers an 18-hole championship golf course, 14 miles of hiking trails, and hunting and fishing areas. The park has a lodge with 148 rooms, 54 two bedroom cabins, and a 212 unit camping area. The horse camp, with its 63 miles of bridal trails, is one of the park’s growing attractions. You must bring your own horse.

Sizable populations of largemouth bass, crappies, bluegills, walleyes and muskellunge are present. Fishing is particularly good in the many embayment areas, and along the artificial reef on the north branch of the lake. Hunting is permitted on designated areas. Check with park or wildlife officers for delineation of these areas. Cottontail rabbit, gray and fox squirrels, deer, grouse, quail, woodchuck, raccoon, mink, muskrat, beaver, wild turkey and waterfowl are abundant. A walk out archery range was recently added for bow hunting enthusiasts. An ODNR Division of Wildlife office is located near the main park entrance.

The 2,500 foot beach is one of the largest inland beaches in Ohio. The modern bathhouse provides showers, lockers, toilets, and a snack bar.

There are several picnic areas with tables and grills in scenic locations around the lake. A shelter house is available on a first-come, first-served basis. A wheelchair accessible picnic area with hard surfaced-paths and accessible latrines, parking, and tables is located off Park Road 1.

Salt Fork and Sugartree Marinas offer a great variety and number of rental boats. Available for rental are waverunners, ski boats, pontoon boats, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes and high performance pontoons for tubing. Rentals are only available at Sugartree Marina at the north end of the lake close to the lodge, cabins, and golf course. Overnight docking is only available at Saltfork Marina. Both locations offer boat accessories, supplies, logo clothing, fuel, ice, pumpout service and food. Closed November 1 through March 1.

Enjoy fishing at this popular 3,500-acre Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) lake, or relax while sailing, waterskiing or sun bathing on the sandy swimming beach. Seneca Lake area also offers a more secluded retreat for camping or swimming in this scenic wonderland. Planned activities are available for campers and day-users. Seneca Lake, largest of the MWCD lakes, is stocked with a variety of game fish. A full service marina provides boat and motor sales, service, rental, boating supplies, bait, tackle, and licenses. Hunters enjoy acres of land open during the season. The scenic, peaceful picnic areas include tables, grills, and shelters. Vacation cabins, camper cabins, log cabin nature center, special events, hiking trails, amphitheater and playground.

For a quiet vacation at the lake, there are two-bedroom cabins. Those looking for a more rugged stay will be pleased with more than 513 campsites in two locations, many wooded. The lake is located off State Route 313, 12 miles southeast of Cambridge, Exit 37 from Interstate 77.
