About Marc Kovac

I am the Capital Bureau chief at the Ohio Statehouse for the Dix newspaper chain and The Youngstown Vindicator. I cover Ohio politics, legislation, etc., for newspapers in Wooster, Ashland, Defiance, Ravenna, Alliance and Cambridge.

I’ve been a full-time, professional newspaper reporter and/or editor since 1993. I spent my first seven years working as a staff writer, business editor and (for a very short stint) interim managing editor at The Tribune in Ames, Iowa, a little paper that was co-owned by Pulitzer-winner Michael Gartner. I worked another seven years as business editor, farm editor, county government reporter and special projects editor at The Daily Record in Wooster (part of the Dix chain). I started covering the Statehouse in late January 2007.I hold a bachelor’s degree in news-editorial journalism from Ball State University in lovely Muncie, Ind. I grew up in the southern suburbs of Chicago (graduated from H.L. Richards High School in Oak Lawn). My wife and I have three children.

    What an impressive resume . . . .

  2. Jill says:

Thanks for starting this – great stuff. But why “capital” and not “capitol” since you are, you know, covering the…capitol? :) Meant in the kindness way possible, promise.

  3. mkovac says:

Good question. It was “capitol” under my predecessor. There was some internal discussion about the name when I started. Someone thought “capital” was a better fit (capital city, I suppose, to avoid confusion with the nation’s capitol). And folks around here are more apt to say “Statehouse” rather than Ohio Capitol. If it were up to me, I’d change it to something snappier, like “Don’t Spill Coffee on the Newsroom Carpet Blog,” buy only a handful of my former colleagues would understand… Thanks for your thoughts, though!

Thanks for the response, much appreciated. Good luck. I have the blog in my RSS feed reader.

Its refreshing you comply with first amendment rights enabling posters to post beliefs founded on demands Of natural law (what Mother Nature, God, or Whatever Power decreed to be the reality of the real world), God, democracy, capitalism, the US Constitution, and free, fair, and affordable commerce.

Demanding every corporation, farmer, business, outsourcer sweatshop, and nonprofit, tax-exempt, organization markets the cost in the wholesale and retail price of his or her product and service. Of every workers, consumers, and taxpayers living (including pension and health care). Provide for every child (job) they conceive and fund schools, infrastructure, national security, government services, and etc.; with money derived from wages or independent business profit.

Glad to see Loren has an outlet for his random thoughts of nothing. I truly hope he is running for Wayne County Commissioner. It is hilarious watching the other candidates try not to laugh when they debate and he goes off on his “natural law …only money has value..” rant.

How did he get out away?

    Hi Marc,
I just discovered your blog this morning. It’s very informative. Question: I was reading about the performance audit done on Youngstown City Schools by Mary Taylor’s office. How would I get a copy of the actual document?
    Peggy

  8. mkovac says:

Hey Peggy: You can find a copy on the auditor’s Web site, online at http://www.auditor.state.oh.us/. Look under audits search. Hope that helps…mck

Hi Marc. Great work. Do you still like cheese? How’s Mother Kovac? And did you name your third child Carl, just like you did the first two?

  10. mkovac says:

Gotta love former co-workers who listen to disco music on deadline.

  11. David says:

Hello from “Dixland”. I thought of you recently when all the “Dann-gate” broke loose- some serious job security with that one… I’m sure that kept you busy to say the least.

Anyhow, I enjoyed your article from a few days ago “Weary of life on the Dann Patrol”. So at 12:01 pm today did you get a hair cut, mow your yard, etc?

  12. mkovac says:

Still need a haircut, but I did mow the lawn. It’ll need it again soon with all this rain….

Mark, if all Media founded all articles on demands of Natural Law: what Mother Nature, God, or Whatever Power decreed to be the reality of the real world, democracy, capitalism, the US Constitution, and free, fair, and affordable commerce?

We, the Government of the people, by the people, for the people would elect a Union Man Ronald Reagan president and elect Representatives that abolish FDRs social security program founded on socialist/communist principles and values. That regards, respect, and comply with demands of Natural Law: what Mother Nature, God, or Whatever Power decreed to be the reality of the real world, democracy, capitalism, the US Constitution, and free, fair, and affordable commerce?

Demands every corporation, farmer, business, outsourcer sweatshop, and nonprofit, tax-exempt, organization and Church markets the cost in the wholesale and retail price of his or her product and service; of every workers, consumers, and taxpayers living including pension and health care. Enabling parents to love, nurse, nurture, discipline, protect, and provide, for every child (job) they conceive and fund schools, infrastructure, local and national security, government services, and etc.; with money derived from wages or independent business profit.

    Hey, Marc! Isn’t Loren a girl’s name?

  15. Loren Eberly says:

Mark, is a Quorum needed to elect Candidates?
Reality demands a Quorum of us, the Government of the people, by the people, for the people, of this Representative Republic elects ALL Candidates and decides ALL issues compliant with demands of Natural Law: what Mother Nature, God, or Whatever Power decreed to be the reality of the real world, democracy, capitalism, the US Constitution, and free, fair, and affordable commerce?

This demands 100% of us the Government vote and every corporation, farmer, business, outsourcer sweatshop, and nonprofit, tax-exempt, organization and Church markets the cost in the wholesale and retail price of his or her product and service; of every workers, consumers, and taxpayers living including pension and health care. Enabling parents to love, nurse, nurture, discipline, protect, and provide, for every child (job) they conceive and fund schools, infrastructure, local and national security, government services, and etc.; with money derived from wages or independent business profit.

could some one email me for some follow up regarding if any other footage is available from SB5 opponent testimony, looking for fire fighter testimony just after FOP

  18. mkovac says:

I don’t think any recorded that testimony, unfortunately. I had Tea Party guy, FOP and YSU profs (limited tape and battery).

  19. Jeff says:

Hi Marc. How is your son liking Pine Ridge? Our two oldest kids went there for the church youth mission trip two years ago and it affected them tremendously. They still talk about the kids and their situations.

  20. Becca and Brenden Miller says:

Your readership has extended to the southern state of NC.
We’d be eternally grateful if Dix sent you on another conference to Raleigh so we could see you all again in our neck of the woods!!!

  21. Mark Cassell says:

I looked at the Richard Vedder study. I just compared his per capita income numbers for 1977 and 2008. I can email you the spread sheet. The average per capita income in RTW states is lower than the per capita income in non-RTW states. There’s a slightly higher rate of income growth in RTW states but that just because the base is lower. I can email you the spread sheet.
